Josiah Turner spent his life building structures he would never fully be permitted to enter as an equal.
Born in the red clay Piedmont of North Carolina less than twenty years after Emancipation, he apprenticed as a brick mason while still a boy, learning to measure earth, lime, and fire into permanence. His hands laid walls for courthouses, tobacco warehouses, textile mills, and town buildings that defined the growing Southern landscape of the early twentieth century.
While segregation restricted opportunity, Josiah directed his earnings toward stability that could not easily be taken: land shares, tools, literacy, and education for his children. All three of his daughters attended teacher training schools, entering professions he himself had been barred from. He considered this his finest construction.
In The Elders, Josiah Turner represents the generation of African American craftsmen whose labor quite literally built the civic and industrial infrastructure of North Carolina while their own names remained unrecorded in its public history.
